Throw 9 Tar Orbs on the meteorite and then throw the Fire Orb. This is the cheapest way to do access the ore but also the longest.
Use Grease and Fire Orbs to burn the shell off. The Star Metal ore is encased in the dark smoldering rock - you need to destroy this. On closer inspection you will see it has a golden sheen with an uneven, cratered surface. The main tell-tale sign that this is Star Metal is that the rock is smouldering.
